Clements Library Fellowships

The William L. Clements Library offers fellowships to help scholars access the Library’s rich primary source collections for research. The four broad categories are Long-term, Short-term, Week-long, and Digital fellowships. The application requires a selection of which type of fellowship you would like to be considered for and the duration you expect your research visit to take.

Princeton University Library Research Grants

The Friends of the Princeton University Library offers short-term Library Research Grants to promote scholarly use of the research collections. These Library Research Grants, which have a value of up to $4,000 plus transportation costs, are meant to help defray expenses incurred in traveling to and residing in Princeton during the tenure of the grant.

The American Antiquarian Society Short-Term Visiting Academic Research Fellowships

The American Antiquarian Society offers short-term visiting academic research fellowships tenable for one to two months. The library contains more than three million books, pamphlets, graphic arts, newspapers, periodicals, and manuscripts. AAS collects not only rare or unique items, but since its founding in 1812, the American Antiquarian Society have amassed great quantities of materials that reflect the “stuff” of everyday life–works that describe all aspects of American history, literature and culture, and the ways we have lived as individuals and as communities.

Medieval Academy of America Leyerle-Committee on Centers and Regional Associations Prize for Dissertation Research

In recognition of John Leyerle’s outstanding contributions and continuous service to the Committee on Centers and Regional Associations (CARA), to the Medieval Academy, and to the general conduct of medieval studies in North America, CARA has established an annual prize in the amount of $1,000 to support the doctoral research of a Medieval Academy member who needs to consult materials available in Toronto collections.

American Antiquarian Society David Jaffee Fellowship in Visual and Material Culture

The fellowship will provide a stipend for the study and use of visual and material culture in the pursuit of research on all aspects of American history before 1900. Funding is derived from an endowment established by the family and friends of the late Professor Jaffee and will be used to support a scholar in residence at the American Antiquarian Society, in Worcester, Massachusetts.

American Antiquarian Society Lapides Fellowship in Pre-1865 Juvenile Literature and Ephemera

The fellowship supports research on printed and manuscript material produced in America through 1865 for (or by) children and youth. This fellowship will support projects examining the creative, artistic, cultural, technological, or commercial aspects of American juvenile literature and ephemera produced between the Puritan Era and the Civil War. Located at American Antiquarian Society, in Worcester, Massachusetts.

American Antiquarian Society Justin G. Schiller Fellowship

Justin G. Schiller Fellowship supports research by both doctoral candidates and postdoctoral scholars from any disciplinary perspective on the production, distribution, literary content, or historical context of American children’s books to 1876. Located at American Antiquarian Society, in Worcester, Massachusetts.

New-York Historical Society Helen and Robert Appel Fellowship in History and Technology

The fellowship will be awarded to a candidate who has earned their Ph.D. no later than 2021. Research projects should be based on the collections of New-York Historical and explore the impact of technology on history. The fellowship will carry a stipend of $60,000, plus benefits.

New-York Historical Society Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation / Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Fellowship

This fellowship will be awarded to a candidate who has earned their Ph.D. no later than 2021. Research projects should expand public understanding of New York State history and should include research based on the collections and resources of New-York Historical. This ten-month residency will carry a stipend of $60,000, plus benefits. Applicants should be early career scholars with projects that expand on the understanding of New York State, City, and Long Island History.

National Science Foundation Cultural Anthropology Program – Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Grants (CA-DDRIG)

The primary objective of the Cultural Anthropology Program is to support basic scientific research on the causes, consequences, and complexities of human social and cultural variability. As part of its effort to encourage and support projects that explicitly integrate education and basic research, CA provides support to enhance and improve the conduct of doctoral dissertation projects designed and carried out by doctoral students enrolled in U.S. institutions of higher education who are conducting scientific research that enhances basic scientific knowledge.

The Leakey Foundation Research Grants

The Leakey Foundation was formed to foster research into human origins. The Foundation exclusively funds research related specifically to human origins, including paleoanthropology, genetics, primate behavior, and studies of modern hunter-gatherer groups. Other areas of study are generally not funded.

*Kosciuszko Foundation Tuition Scholarships for American Students of Polish Descent

Kosciuszko Foundation Tuition Scholarships support American students of Polish descent for graduate level studies, such as masters and Ph.D. studies, at colleges and universities in the United States. Scholarships range from $1,000 to $7,000. Funding is only for full-time studies in the United States and English Schools of Medicine in Poland.

Children’s Literature Association Hannah Beiter Graduate Student Research Grants

The Beiter Grants have a combined maximum fund of up to $5,000 per year, and individual awards may range from $500 to $1,500, based on the number and needs of the winning applicants. Beiter grant funds are not intended as income to assist in the completion of a graduate degree (e.g., applied to tuition), but as support for research that may be related to the dissertation or master’s thesis.

American Center of Research Pierre & Patricia Bikai Fellowship

The Pierre & Patricia Bikai Fellowship will be awarded to assist one graduate student for two months or two students for one month in conducting archaeological research in Jordan. The fellowship will provide room and board at ACOR and a stipend of $600 per month.

American Institute of Pakistan Studies Junior Research Fellowship

Awards will include international travel expenses and stipends (subject to availability of funds). The amount of the stipends will be comparable to Fulbright Awards and will be determined by the Fellowships Committee based on availability of funds and current rates as defined by the U S State Department. (Total fellowship support can range from $3,000 to $25,000). Funds may be used for research on materials relating to the history and culture of Pakistan and must take place in the country (and locations within the country) for which your fellowship is approved.

Council for European Studies (CES) Pre-Dissertation Research Fellowship

CES Pre-Dissertation Fellowships are intended to fund students’ first major research project in Europe. Students who have already engaged in extensive field work and study in Europe related to their dissertation are not eligible. Applicants must be in the exploratory, early stage of their research. Applicants must not have completed the majority of their doctoral coursework.

McNeil Center For Early American Studies Dissertation Fellowships

Fellows receive office space in the Center’s magnificent building on the University of Pennsylvania’s campus and library, computer, and other privileges at the University. Limited travel funds for research are also available. While no teaching is required for most fellowships, all McNeil Center fellows are expected to be in residence in Philadelphia during the academic year and to participate regularly in the Center’s program of seminars and other activities.

Medieval Academy of America Dissertation Grant

Medieval Academy dissertation grants support advanced graduate students who are writing Ph.D. dissertations on medieval topics. The $2,000 grants help defray research expenses such as the cost of travel to research collections and the cost of photographs, photocopies, microfilms, and other research materials. The cost of books or equipment (e.g., computers) is not included. All graduate students whose primary research focuses on an aspect of medieval studies are eligible.

*The Leakey Foundation Baldwin Fellowships (New Applicants)

Franklin Mosher Baldwin Memorial Fellowships are intended for students with citizenship in a country where there are limited opportunities for advanced training and education in fields of research related to human origins. This program makes it possible for scholars to pursue education or training from an institution outside of their home country. This award is for a program of approved, advanced special training or studies leading towards an MA or PhD. It is limited to two years of support. The maximum award is limited to $15,000 per year.

Early American Industries Association Research Grants

The Early American Industries Association supports projects related to its mission to preserve and present historic trades, crafts, and tools, and the interpretation of their impact on our lives. Applications are due March 15th of each year. Individual grants up to $3,000.00 may be awarded.

*The Leakey Foundation Baldwin Fellowships (Returning Applicants)

Franklin Mosher Baldwin Memorial Fellowships are intended for students with citizenship in a country where there are limited opportunities for advanced training and education in fields of research related to human origins. This program makes it possible for scholars to pursue education or training from an institution outside of their home country. This award is for a program of approved, advanced special training or studies leading towards an MA or PhD. It is limited to two years of support. The maximum award is limited to $15,000 per year.

Jane C. Waldbaum Archaeological Field School Scholarship

This scholarship is intended to help students who are planning to participate in archaeological field work for the first time. The Scholarship Fund provides $1000 each to help pay expenses associated with participation in an archaeological field work project (minimum stay one month/4 weeks).

GHI Fellowships at the Horner Library

The fellowship will be awarded to PhD and M.A. students and advanced scholars without restrictions in research fields or geographical provenance. The GHI Fellowship at the Horner Library in Philadelphia will provide a travel subsidy and an allowance of $1,000 to $3,500 depending on the length of the stay and the qualifications of the fellows.

American Philosophical Society Phillips Fund for Native American Research

The Phillips Fund of the American Philosophical Society provides grants for research in Native American linguistics, ethnohistory, and the history of studies of Native Americans, in the continental United States and Canada. The grants are intended for such costs as travel, tapes, films, and consultants’ fees.

Early American Industries Association Research Grants

The Early American Industries Association supports projects related to its mission to preserve and present historic trades, crafts, and tools, and the interpretation of their impact on our lives. A grant may not be used to pay for salaries, historical artifacts, software, or equipment in whole or in part. A research grant may be used to supplement existing fellowships, scholarships, or other forms of aid. The grant is not to be used to reduce or substitute for such assistance.

Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library & Museum Scholar Award

The Gerald R. Ford Scholar Award in Honor of Robert M. Teeter is an annual award of $5000 given to a doctoral student to support dissertation research and writing in any field related to any aspect of the United States political process and public policy during the last half of the 20th century. Of special interest is the role and analysis of public opinion in that process. The Selection Committee encourages applications from doctoral students in a wide range of fields, including Political Science, History, Journalism, Communications, Public Policy, Foreign Relations, and American Studies.

ASEEES Dissertation Research Grant

The Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies is offering research grants with a stipend of maximum $6,000, for the purposes of conducting doctoral dissertation research in Eastern Europe and Eurasia in any aspect of Slavic, East European, and Eurasian studies in any discipline. These awards may be held concurrently with other partial funding sources, but are intended to support students whose projects have not yet been fully supported. The grant is for primary dissertation research.

Jacques Barzun Fellowship for Collections and Programming in the History of Biology

The Library & Museum of the American Philosophical Society invites applications for a four-month, full-time fellowship for an advanced Ph.D. candidate, or recent MA or Ph.D. recipient specializing in the history of biology. This fellowship takes place in Philadelphia, PA.

Society for the History of Technology National Aeronautics Space Administration Fellowships

The Fellowships in Aerospace History are offered annually by the National Aeronautics Space Administration (NASA) to support significant scholarly research projects in aerospace history. These fellowships grant the opportunity to engage in significant and sustained advanced research in all aspects of the history of aerospace from the earliest human interest in flight to the present, including cultural and intellectual history, economic history, history of law and public policy, and the history of science, engineering, and management.

D. Kim Foundation Fellowships for the History of Science and Technology in East Asia

The Foundation provides fellowships and grants to support graduate students and young scholars who are working in the history of science and technology in modern East Asia. Monetary support is provided based on varying fellowships and grants.

Rutgers University School of Management and Labor Relations J. Robert Beyster Graduate Fellowship

This fellowship supports a Ph.D. student who is initiating or completing a thesis. The fellowship amount is $25,000 per year. The funds can be used to support full-time study at Rutgers University or research and travel expenses for graduate students at other universities.

National Women’s Studies Association Graduate Scholarship

NWSA will award a student who, in the fall of the year of the award, will be engaged in the research or writing stages of a Master’s Thesis or Ph.D. Dissertation in the interdisciplinary field of women’s studies. The research project must enhance the NWSA mission.

*Anna Marguerite McCann Diversity Student Travel Grants

Diversity Student Travel Grants are meant to assist undergraduate or graduate students who qualify under the category of “underrepresented minority” with their travel expenses to attend the Archaeological Institute of America Annual Meeting.

Music Library Association Dena Epstein Award for Archival and Library Research in American Music

The Dena Epstein Award for Archival and Library Research in American Music was created through a generous endowment from Morton and Dena Epstein to the Music Library Association in 1995. Grants are awarded to support research in archives or libraries internationally on any aspect of American music.

University of North Carolina Center for Middle East & Islamic Studies Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center Research Fellowship

SQCC established its Research Fellowship Program, which aims to promote and cultivate scholarly research about Oman across several academic disciplines. The fellowship is open to PhD candidates and university academics who are US citizens or affiliated with an American university, and funds one scholar or team of scholars to carry out research in Oman each year. The fellowship awards up to $51,000 for the fellow or team of fellows.

Kress Foundation History of Art Institutional Fellowship

Advanced training in European art history requires direct exposure to the object of study, prolonged access to key information resources such as libraries and photographic archives, the development of professional relationships with colleagues abroad, and sustained immersion in European cultures. Nominees must be U.S. citizens or individuals matriculated at an American university. Dissertation research must focus on European art from antiquity to the early 19th century and applicants must be ABD by the time their fellowship begins. Candidates must be nominated by their academic department.

European Union Studies Association Haas Fund Fellowship

The EUSA Haas Fund Fellowship Competition is an annual fellowship for graduate student EU-related dissertation research. It offers at least one fellowship per year of a minimum of $2000 to support the dissertation research of any graduate student pursuing an EU-related dissertation topic.

The Kurt Weill Foundation For Music Grant Program

Each year the Kurt Weill Foundation Grant Program awards financial support to not-for-profit organizations for performances of Kurt Weill’s musical works, to individuals and not-for-profit organizations for scholarly research projects, and to not-for-profit organizations for educational initiatives directly related to Weill and/or Lotte Lenya.

Graham Foundation Carter Manny Research Award

The Carter Manny Award supports the completion of outstanding doctoral dissertations on architecture and its role in the arts, culture, and society and recognizes emerging scholars whose work promises to challenge and reshape contemporary discourse and impact the field at large.

American Institute of Indian Studies Junior Fellowships

Junior Fellowships are for graduate students conducting research for their doctoral dissertations in India. Junior Fellowships are available to doctoral candidates at U.S. universities in all fields of study. These grants are specifically designed to enable doctoral candidates to pursue their dissertation research in India. Junior Research Fellows establish formal affiliation with Indian universities and Indian research supervisors. Awards are available for up to 11 months.

Berlin Program for Advanced German and European Studies

The program promotes a new generation of young North American scholars with specialized knowledge of modern and contemporary Germany and Europe. The program supports scholars in all social science and humanities disciplines, including historians working on the period since the mid-18th century. Fellowships are awarded for doctoral dissertation research as well as postdoctoral research which leads to completion of a monograph.

Japan Foundation Doctoral Fellowship

This program provides support to outstanding scholars, researchers, and professionals in the field by offering the opportunity to conduct research in Japan.

Fred W. Smith National Library for the Study of George Washington at Mount Vernon Research Fellowships

Fellowships are often awarded to support research focused on the life and leadership of George Washington and his place in the development of American civic life and culture. Projects related to the broad themes and historical problems of colonial America, the Revolutionary era, and the early American republic are accepted. This includes research that helps us better understand the history of race, slavery, and abolition as well as the history of fine arts and material culture in the eighteenth century.

Thoma Foundation Research & Travel Awards In Art of the Spanish Americas

Congruent with the Marilynn Thoma Fellowship, the Foundation offers annual grants to scholars, curators, art historians, and advanced graduate students working on MA theses or PhD dissertations in support of projects and research initiatives that will advance the field of the art of the Spanish Americas. These grants are meant to help defray the costs of research-related expenses. Funding is provided each year to several scholars selected by an international jury of undisclosed experts in the field.

Center for Jewish History Graduate Research Fellowships

The Center for Jewish History offers ten-month fellowships to doctoral candidates to support original research using the collections of the Center’s partners – American Jewish Historical Society, American Sephardi Federation, Leo Baeck Institute, Yeshiva University Museum, and YIVO Institute for Jewish Research.

Newberry Research Library Short-Term Fellowships

Fellowships are available for 1 to 2 months. Short-Term Fellowships provide opportunities for individuals who have a specific need for the Newberry’s collection. Most fellowships are available for one month with a stipend of $3,000 per month. These fellowships are intended to assist researchers who need to examine specific items in the Newberry’s collection in order to advance a significant scholarly project.

American Society for Environmental History Hal Rothman Dissertation Fellowship

The Hal Rothman Research Fellowship was created to recognize graduate student achievements in environmental history research in honor of Hal Rothman, recipient of ASEH’s Distinguished Service award in 2006 and editor of Environmental History for many years. The fellowship provides a single payment of $1,000 for Ph.D. graduate student research and travel in the field of environmental history, without geographical restriction.

American Society for Environmental History J. Donald Hughes Graduate Research Fellowships

The J. Donald Hughes Research Fellowships were created to recognize graduate student achievements in environmental history research in honor of J. Donald Hughes, recipient of ASEH’s Distinguished Service award in 2000 and editor of Environmental History from 1983 to 1985. The fellowships provide a single payment of $1,000 for graduate student research and travel in the field of environmental history, without geographical restriction.

Western Society for French History Millstone Research Fellowship

The Millstone Fellowship provides $2500 for research in France. Eligibility is restricted to doctoral students, untenured and adjunct faculty members, and independent scholars who reside in North America and whose research related to French and Francophone history and culture requires work in archives, libraries, or other repositories in France.

Music Library Association Carol June Bradley Award for Historical Research in Music Librarianship

The award exists to support research into the history of music libraries and music librarianship. The grant will be awarded to support costs associated with the research process, such as travel, lodging, meals, supplies, and digital, photocopy, or microfilm reproduction of source material.

*Richard A. Horovitz Fund for Professional Development

The Horovitz Fund is dedicated to African artists and scholars in the humanities and social sciences. A one-time award is granted to one or two students for graduate study for a 12 month period. The amount of the award normally ranges from $6,000 to $8,000.

Fritz Thyssen Foundation Travel Subsidies

The Fritz Thyssen Foundation supports research in the fields of history, language and culture, state, economics and society as well as medicine, devoting special attention to support for junior researchers. The award of grants to doctoral graduates and the funding of staff positions in projects help lay the material foundations for scientific work. Financial resources can be applied for from the Fritz Thyssen Foundation to defray travel expenses that are directly related to a project in the humanities, social science or biomedical fields.

BMI Foundation Woody Guthrie Fellowship

The Woody Guthrie Fellowship is an annual research program open to scholars pursuing topics or themes related to American folk music progenitor Woody Guthrie. First established in 2005, the program offers an unprecedented opportunity for in-depth exploration into the many facets of Guthrie’s life, legacy, and contribution to American and world culture.
