Postdoctoral Fellowships

Fellowships and residential fellowships for scholars in their final year of the Ph.D. program and within a certain number of years of completing the Ph.D. (typically within five years). Graduate Students should apply to these when they are on the job market, and Junior Faculty can apply to these within the first years of their appointments but before achieving tenure.

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Native American Scholars Initiative (NASI) Fellowships

This 12-month residential fellowship is intended for a recent Ph.D., professor at any level seeking sabbatical support for a research project, or an independent scholar working closely with an Indigenous community on a project.

Emory University Johnson Center Post-Doctoral Fellowship

All fellows will be required to make a presentation of their work (presentation varies by rank). Post-doctoral fellows will also teach one course in the spring semester.

Legal Cultures: Confrontations Beyond Comparisons Postdoctoral Fellowships (Berlin, DE)

Rechtskulturen (‘legal cultures’) is a Berlin-based postdoctoral research program which is designed to explore the law in new and innovative ways. We intend to create a space of reflection and communication where fundamental and salient questions of the law and its context(s) can be re-negotiated from a variety of disciplinary and regional perspectives, and re-connected with jurisprudence and legal methodology.

Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies Postdoctoral Fellowship

The Davis Center brings people together to learn about Russian and Eurasian Studies at Harvard University. Postdoctoral Fellows serve a full-time, 9-month term in residence which includes a stipend of $46,000 and $2,000 in additional research funding. Polonsky Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute

The American Center of Research in Amman (ACOR) Post-Doctoral Fellowship

The American Center of Research offers a variety of fellowships for pre-doctoral and post-doctoral scholars and scholars with a terminal degree in their field, pursuing research or publication projects in the natural and social sciences, humanities, and associated disciplines relating to the Middle East. Center for 17th- and 18th-Century Studies at UCLA Predoctoral Fellowships

One-to-three-month fellowships are available to doctoral candidates whose dissertation research involves the area of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century studies or one of the other areas represented in the Clark Library’s collections with a stipend of $3,000 per month for the one-to-three-month residency.

Society for the History of Technology Hindle Fellowship

The Brooke Hindle Postdoctoral Fellowship in the History of Technology honors the contribution of Brooke Hindle to the work of the Society for the History of Technology in the Netherlands. The Fellowship is for $10,000 and may be used for any purpose connected with research or writing in the history of technology for a period of not less than three months during the calendar year following the award.

German Historical Institute Doctoral and Postdoctoral Research Fellowships (Short-Term)

The European University Institute (the Departments and the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies) acts as a host institution for Marie Curie Fellowships which are awarded by the European Commission.

Academy of Finland Fellowship

The Academy of Finland awards fellowships for post-doctoral research at the European University Institute. The Academy takes into account the significance and impact of the research in terms of the Finnish society and business and industry. In principle, a project to be funded shall serve Finnish research and society or international collaboration.

*European University Institute Canon Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship

The Canon Foundation and the EUI jointly award one Canon Foundation Fellowship for post-doctoral research at the European University Institute. The fellowship is open to candidates of Japanese nationality or permanent residents of Japan.

Abe Fellowship with the Social Science Research Council in New York

The Abe Fellowship with the Social Science Research Council in New York is designed to encourage international multidisciplinary research on topics of pressing global concern. The program seeks to foster the development of a new generation of researchers who are interested in policy-relevant topics of long-range importance and who are willing to become key members of a bilateral and global research network built around such topics.

Fulbright Israel administers the Fulbright Academic Program in Israel, and plans to award fellowships to U.S. postdoctoral scholars who seek to pursue research at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Grants are open to researchers in all academic disciplines and support research programs in Israel for up to 20 months (two academic years).

Cornell University Society for the Humanities Fellowships

The Society for the Humanities at Cornell University invites applications for residential fellowships from scholars and artists whose projects reflect on the 2023-24 theme of Crossing. Up to six fellows will be appointed. The fellowships are held for one year (August through July). Each Society Fellow will receive $56,000.

Columbia University Society of Fellows

The Columbia Society of Fellows brings together exceptional early career scholars in the humanities and humanistic social sciences to be part of a vibrant cross-disciplinary community. In addition to teaching opportunities in affiliated departments and time for research, Fellows participate in and often organize lecture series, workshops, and other scholarly events that contribute to the intellectual life of the SOF/Heyman and the university more broadly.

University of Pennsylvania Herbert D. Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies Jews and Modern Legal Culture Fellowship

The Katz Center invites applications from scholars working on projects related to this focus, including legal scholars alongside scholars approaching the study of law from other fields and disciplines. The Center seeks to draw from a wide range of methodological and disciplinary approaches, including but not limited to social, legal, and intellectual history, anthropology, literature, religious studies, jurisprudence, political science, the social sciences, and philosophy.

Stanford Humanities Center Fellowships

External fellowships are intended primarily for individuals currently teaching in or affiliated with an academic institution, but independent scholars may apply. Faculty fellowships are awarded across the spectrum of academic ranks (assistant, associate, and full professor) and a goal of the selection process is to create a diverse community of scholars. All applicants must have a PhD and be at least three years beyond receipt of the degree at the start of the fellowship year. Located in Stanford, California.

Woodrow Wilson Center Fellowships

The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars aims to unite the world of ideas to the world of policy by supporting pre-eminent scholarship and linking that scholarship to issues of concern to officials in Washington. Academic candidates must be at the post-doctoral level and have published a book or monograph beyond the Ph.D. dissertation.

The Getty Foundation – Getty Pre- and Postdoctoral Fellowships and GRI-NEH Postdoctoral Fellowships

Getty Predoctoral and Postdoctoral Fellowships are intended for emerging scholars to complete work on projects related to the Getty Research Institute’s annual research theme or the African American Art History Initiative. Recipients may be in residence at the Getty Research Institute or Getty Villa, where they pursue research projects, complete their dissertations, or expand dissertation for publication.

The Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies – I Tatti Fellowship

Fifteen I Tatti Residential Fellowships, each for twelve months, are available annually for post-doctoral research in any aspect of the Italian Renaissance, broadly understood historically to include the period from the 14th to the 17th century and geographically to include transnational dialogues between Italy and other cultures (e.g. Latin American, Mediterranean, African, Asian etc.). Located at the Villa I Tatti, The Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies in Florence, Italy.

Institute for Research in the Humanities Biruté Ciplijauskaité Fellowship in Spanish Literatureof the Iberian Peninsula

The Institute for Research in the Humanities at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is pleased to offer up to two Biruté Ciplijauskaité Fellowships for the 2022-2023 academic year, to be awarded to scholars from outside the University of Wisconsin-Madison. These fellowships are available to scholars with a Ph.D. (at any stage of career), working in Spanish literature of the Iberian peninsula. We are especially interested in scholars working on poetry.

Max Weber Fellowships

The Max Weber Programme (MWP) at the European University Institute (EUI) is a unique postdoctoral programme in the historical and social sciences in Europe. It is open to applicants who are within 5 years from the completion of their PhD, from anywhere in the world, regardless of nationality.

Wolf Humanities Center Postdoctoral Fellowship

The Wolf Humanities Center awards five (5) one-year Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowships each academic year to junior scholars in the humanities who are no more than five years out of their doctorate. Preference will be given to candidates not yet in tenure track positions, whose proposals are interdisciplinary, who have not previously enjoyed use of the resources of the University of Pennsylvania, and who would particularly benefit from and contribute to Penn’s intellectual life.

Huntington Longterm Research Fellowships

The Huntington will award 14 Long-Term Fellowships for nine to 12 months in residence, each with a stipend of $50,000. Although nine of these awards are open to scholars working on projects in any area where The Huntington’s collections are strong, there are specific awards for the study of Octavia E. Butler (the Butler Fellowship), maritime history (The Kemble Fellowship), the history of medicine (The Molina Fellowship) and the history of science (The Dibner Fellowships). Three awards (the Thom Fellowships) are reserved for recent post-doctoral scholars.

Smithsonian Postgraduate/Postdoctoral Fellowships in Conservation of Museum Collections Program

The Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex. Postdoctoral students are encouraged to apply for fellowships in Conservation of Museum Collections Program. Budget and justification for equipment, supplies, research-related travel costs, and other support required to conduct the research itself (excluding stipend and relocation costs). Smithsonian Institution Fellowship Program (SIFP)

Applicants to the Smithsonian Institution Fellowship Program must propose to conduct research in a discipline pursued at the Smithsonian and must submit a specific and detailed research proposal indicating why the Smithsonian is an appropriate place to carry out the study. Projects that broaden and diversify the research conducted within these disciplines are encouraged. Fellowships are offered to support research at Smithsonian facilities or field stations. Fellows are expected to spend most of their tenure in residence at the Smithsonian, except when arrangements are made for periods of field work or research travel. Located in Washington, DC.

Mahindra Humanities Center at Harvard Postdoctoral Fellowships

The Mahindra Humanities Center interprets the environmental humanities in the broadest terms, to include all parts of the world and historical eras. Topics may include humanistic approaches to climate change, biodiversity, social justice, environmental justice, food justice, regenerative practices, gardening, landscape, urban foraging, health, and animal studies. Binational Visiting Tandem Program in the History of Migration at GHI PRO in Berkeley

The German Historical Institute fellowship program promotes research in history and related disciplines and international exchange of scholars and now offers German and North American postdoctoral scholars the opportunity to develop a binational research tandem which links up two academics–one from Germany and one from North America–working on research in the field of history of migration.

Ransom Center One-to-Three-Month Fellowships

Stanford Humanities Center Mellon Fellowship of Scholars in the Humanities

The Mellon Fellowship of Scholars in the Humanities program at Stanford University in California is a unique opportunity for recent PhD recipients in the humanities to develop as scholars and teachers. Candidates must have received a qualified PhD within a specified time frame, as follows: 2021 Competition (for fellowships beginning Autumn 2022): PhD received between January 1, 2019 and June 30, 2022.

Omohundro Institute Scholars’ Workshop

Each summer up to eight untenured scholars gather at the Omohundro Institute in Williamsburg, Virginia for two weeks to work both as a group and individually with OI editors and staff on either a manuscript chapter or a journal article in progress. The weeks include seminar-style meetings on conceptual development, manuscript editing, and source verification as well as time for writing, revising, and consulting.

Society for the Humanities Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowships at Cornell University

The Society for the Humanities will sponsor two postdoctoral teaching-research fellowships in the humanities, each awarded for the two-year period beginning August 2022. Each fellowship offers a stipend of $56,000/year. While in residence at Cornell, Mellon Postdoctoral Fellows hold department affiliations and joint appointments with the Society for the Humanities, have limited teaching duties, and the opportunity for scholarly work. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowships are available in two areas of specialization this year, in the departments of Anthropology and Romance Studies.

Center for Jewish History NEH Scholar in Residence Fellowship

Applications are welcome from scholars in any field who have completed a PhD more than six years prior to the start of the fellowship and whose research will benefit considerably from consultation with materials in the collections of the Center’s partners – American Jewish Historical Society, American Sephardi Federation, Leo Baeck Institute, Yeshiva University Museum, and YIVO Institute for Jewish Research. Thoma Foundation Fellowship

The Carl & Marilynn Thoma Foundation offers predoctoral and postdoctoral fellowships annually in support of projects and research initiatives that will advance study of the art of the Spanish Americas. Scholars may come from any discipline, but all projects must relate to the study of art and art history. Exceptionally accomplished scholars holding an MA may also apply. International scholars, particularly from Latin America, are strongly encouraged to apply.

*Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow Program in Asian Studies

Through the generous support of the Henry Luce Foundation, ASIANetwork has been providing its member colleges with grants to support the hiring of a postdoctoral teaching fellow in Asian Studies. ASIANetwork will provide $38,000/year to each of the selected colleges as partial support for the hiring of the teaching fellow for one or two years and an additional stipend to the fellow’s mentor ($1,250 for a 2-year and $750 for a 1-year grant).

The Mandel Scholarship Program offers two or three postgraduate research fellowships each year in the fields of humanities and Jewish Studies. The fellowship is open to Israeli and international scholars who have completed their PhDs.

The Princeton Society of Fellows in the Liberal Arts

The Princeton Society of Fellows in the Liberal Arts seeks to support innovative interdisciplinary approaches to scholarship and teaching in the humanities and humanities-related social sciences. Each year, the Society chooses a new cohort of postdoctoral Cotsen fellows, who are appointed for three-year terms to conduct research and to teach in a home department, often also a program, at Princeton University.

Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library Visiting Postdoctoral Scholar Fellowships at Yale University

Awarded on a competitive basis, Visiting Fellowships are designed to enable postdoctoral or equivalent research at Beinecke Library on a full-time basis for a period of one to three months. Students enrolled in degree programs are not eligible. Stipends cover travel expenses to and from New Haven in addition to paying a living allowance of $4000 per month.

The Henry Chauncey ‘57 Postdoctoral Fellowships at Yale University

Postdoctoral fellows are expected to remain in residence through the duration of their fellowship and contribute to the intellectual life of the Brady-Johnson Program in Grand Strategy and to International Security Studies by participating in their activities and development. Offices are located on Yale’s campus. The salary is $55,000 plus $5,000 for research expenses.

Science History Institute Beckman Center 80/20 Postdoctoral Fellowships

These fellowships reflect the Institute’s commitment to providing a career-launching platform for recent PhDs and our support for the career diversity initiatives of the American Historical Association and affiliated scholarly societies. Smithsonian Mpala Postdoctoral Fellowship
