The Grawemeyer Awards

The Louisville Grawemeyer Awards are five annual prizes given in the fields of music, political science, psychology, education and religion. A prize amount of $100,000 will given to the recipient for each award. Any work (book, address, essay, etc.) will be eligible for consideration. Candidates must be nominated. Deadlines and submission requirements vary.

The Association for the Advancement of Baltic Studies Book Prize

The Association for the Advancement of Baltic Studies (AABS) promotes research and education in Baltic Studies. The AABS Book Prize awards an outstanding English-language scholarly book in Baltic Studies. The prize consists of a $1,000 cash award.

* The Western Association of Women Historians Awards and Prizes

The Western Association of Women Historians (WAWH) promotes the interests of women historians both in academic settings and in the field of history generally. The WAWH offers eight annual awards, including but not limited to: prizes for monographs (Gita Chaudhuri Prize), articles (Judith Lee Ridge Prize), and books (Barbara “Penny” Kanner Award). While most submissions are due in January, deadlines and requirments may vary.

International Committee for the History of Technology Prizes

The International Committee for the History of Technology (ICOHTEC) was established to facilitate research and documentation for scholars in all countries in the history of technology. The ICOHTEC offers annual prizes for books (The Turriano ICOHTEC Prize) and scholarly articles (The Maurice Daumas Prize) on the history of technology. Submissions are due in January. All awards include a cash prize.

PEN American Translation Prizes

PEN America provides funding to support excellence in translation. PEN America offers several translation prizes and grants for book-length prose (PEN Translation Prize) and poetry (PEN Award for Poetry in Translation) into English. The award confers a $3,000 prize to the translator of the winning book. Special prizes are available for translations of Paraguayan and Italian literature.

The Working-Class Studies Association Awards

The Working-Class Studies Association (WSCA) was formed to promote the study of working-class people and their cultures. The WSCA issues a number of awards to recognize the best new work in the field of working-class studies.The WSCA invites nominations of work published in books or articles that provides representations of working-class life, culture, and movements.

Felicia A. Holton Book Award

Archaeological Institute of America
The Felicia A. Holton Book Award is given annually to a writer who, through a major work of non-fiction, represents the importance and excitement of archaeology to the general public. The work should have broad public appeal and be written for an adult lay audience in a clear and engaging style. It should convey the excitement of archaeological discovery accurately and responsibly. It should be well-researched and provide new insight for the general public.

The Eugene S. Ferguson Prize

The Eugene S. Ferguson Prize is awarded biennially by The Society for the History of Technology for an outstanding reference work or resource that supports research and teaching in the history of technology. The prize consists of a cash award.

The Society of American Archivists Awards of Excellence

The Society of American Archivists (SAA) is dedicated to the needs and interests of archives and archivists.The SAA offers numerous prizes by nomination for books, articles, and essays on archives and the archives profession. The SAA also offers awards for the development of innovative finding tools.

The Midwestern History Association Awards and Prizes

The Midwestern History Association (MHA) is dedicated to rebuilding the field of Midwestern history. The MHA presents five awards annually that contribute to the advancement of the study of the Midwest, including awards for books (Jon Gjerde Prize) and articles (Dorothy Schwieder Prize).

Anna Marguerite McCann Award For Fieldwork Reports

Archaeological Institute of America. In keeping with the Code of Ethics of the AIA, which emphasizes the need for archaeologists to publish field research, the Anna Marguerite McCann Award for Fieldwork Reports recognizes an outstanding monograph that presents results from an archaeological field project (e.g. excavation and/or survey), as recommended by the Committee, in time for presentation of the award at the Annual Meeting of the Institute. Nominees may be single- or multi-authored or an edited volume of collaborative research that treats data collected through fieldwork conducted at a specific site(s) or region.

James R. Wiseman Book Award

Archaeological Institute of America. Each year, the James R. Wiseman Book Award Committee will recommend, in time for the presentation of the award at the Annual Meeting of the Institute, the academic work on an archaeological topic it deems most worthy of recognition in that year. Books and monographs bearing a date of publication within the four calendar years prior to (not including) the year of the Annual Meeting at which the award is made are eligible for consideration. Textbooks will not be considered, and handbooks or other edited volumes must be exceptionally strong contributions to qualify for consideration. Authors/editors must have been AIA members in good standing for at least one year immediately preceding nomination. For multi-authored or multi-edited volumes, this requirement applies only to the primary author/primary editor/principal investigator.

James Russel Lowell Prize

The Modern Language Association invites authors to compete for the annual James Russell Lowell Prize, which will be awarded for a scholarly book. To qualify for the prize, a book must be an outstanding literary or linguistic study or a critical biography. Studies dealing with literary theory, media, cultural history, and interdisciplinary topics are eligible; books that are primarily translations will not be considered. The prize consists of a cash award.

The Annual Balzan Prizes

The four annual Balzan Prizes are awarded to persons or an organization that has achieved distinction for outstanding humanitarian work. The International Balzan Prize Foundation invites nominations for international, cultural, and scientific institutions (universities, research institutes and academies) and highly distinguished figures.

Leo Baeck Institute Year Book Essay Prize in German-Jewish Studies

The Leo Baeck Institute Year Book Essay Prize was established to stimulate new research on the history and culture of German-speaking Jewry and to promote young researchers in the field. The essay can be on any topic on the history and culture of German-speaking Central European Jewry from early modern times through to the present.

Teaching Literature Book Award

The Teaching Literature Book Award seeks to encourage and recognize excellence in research on teaching literature by honoring a book-length work on teaching literature at the post-secondary or graduate level. This international, juried prize is conferred biennially by the faculty in the Idaho State University PhD program in English and the Teaching of English.

MLA Prize for a First Book

The Modern Language Association invites authors to compete for the annual MLA Prize for a First Book, which will be awarded for an outstanding scholarly work as the first book-length publication by a current member of the association. The prize includes a cash award.

Brittingham and Pollak Poetry Prize

The University of Wisconsin Press awards the Brittingham Prize in Poetry and the Felix Pollak Prize in Poetry. Prizes are awarded annually to the two best book-length manuscripts of original poetry submitted in an open competition. Each winning poet will receive a $1,500 cash prize and publication by the University of Wisconsin Press.

The American Studies Association Prizes

The American Studies Association (ASA) promotes the development and dissemination of interdisciplinary research on U.S. culture and history in a global context. The ASA sponsors a range of awards and prizes for scholarship, including the John Hope Franklin Prize for best book in American Studies. Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (ASEEES) University of Southern California Book Prize in Literary and Cultural Studies

The University of Southern California Book Prize in Literary and Cultural Studies, established in 2009 and sponsored by the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Southern California, is awarded annually for an outstanding monograph published on Russia, Eastern Europe or Eurasia in the fields of literary and cultural studies in the previous calendar year. The University of Southern California Book Prize in Literary and Cultural Studies carries a cash award and is presented at the ASEEES Annual Convention.

Catharine Stimpson Prize for Outstanding Feminist Scholarship

The University of Chicago Press and Signs: Journal of Women in Culture and Society are pleased to announce the competition for the Catharine Stimpson Prize for Outstanding Feminist Scholarship. Papers may be on any topic that falls under the broad rubric of interdisciplinary feminist scholarship.The prizewinning paper will be published in Signs, and the author will be provided an honorarium of $1,000.

Modern Greek Studies Association Prizes

The Modern Greek Studies Association showcases the merits of the modern Greek tradition and contemporary Greek culture.The family of prizes includes The Keeley Book Prize, the MGSA Constantinides Memorial Translation Prize, the Karagiannaki Prize for Best Edited Volume. The Western History Association Prizes

The Western History Association (WHA) promotes research and scholarly publications on the American West. Each year the WHA presents over 25 awards, fellowships, and scholarships for outstanding work. Deadlines and submission requirements may vary.

Aldo and Jeanne Scaglione Prize for a Translation of a Literary Work

The Modern Language Association invites translators and publishers to compete for the Aldo and Jeanne Scaglione Prize for a Translation of a Literary Work. This prize consists of a cash award.

Lois Roth Award

The Modern Language Association invites translators and publishers to compete for the annual Lois Roth Award for a translation of a literary work. This prize consists of a cash award.

Matei Calinescu Prize

The Modern Language Association invites authors to compete for the annual Matei Calinescu Prize, which will be awarded for a distinguished book in twentieth- or twenty-first-century literature and thought in any geographical context. The winning author will receive a cash prize.

Joseph B. and Toby Gittler Prize

The Joseph B. and Toby Gittler Prize was created by the late Professor Joseph B. Gittler to recognize outstanding and lasting scholarly contributions to racial, ethnic and/or religious relations. Nominees for the Joseph B. and Toby Gittler Prize will have produced a body of published work that reflects scholarly excellence. The award includes a cash prize of $25,000 and a medal. The prize and medal are presented at a ceremony that includes a reception and a public lecture by the recipient on the Brandeis University campus.

Society for the History of Technology

The Society for the History of Technology (SHOT) was formed in 1958 to encourage the study of the development of technology and its relations with society and culture. Each year, SHOT offers a number of awards and prizes on the history of technology, including for books (Sidney Edelstein Prize), articles (Bernard S. Finn IEEE History Prize), and original reference works (Eugene S. Ferguson Prize). Deadlines and submission requirements vary.

The Society of Automotive Historians

The Society of Automotive Historians encourages research into any aspect of automotive history. Each year, the Society recognizes significant contributions to the publishing, documentation, and preservation of the worldwide history of the motor vehicle in print media (books, articles and magazines) and non-print media (film, video, audio, websites, etc.). The American Musicology Prizes

The American Musicological Society (AMS) exists to expand understanding of music and sound through research, teaching, learning, and advocacy. To realize its mission, the Society fosters new work through a range of awards and prizes, including the Roland Jackson Award for a work on music analysis, the Alfred Einstein Award for an article in musicology, and the Claude V. The University of Tulsa Prizes in Fiction and Poetry

The University of Tulsa offers multiple prizes for original creative works. The Katherine Anne Porter Prize for Fiction is awarded for one short story or a self-contained excerpt from a novel. The Pablo Neruda Prize for Poetry is given for a short collection of poetry. Academy of American Poets: Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize

The Academy of American Poets will award a prize of $25,000 to an outstanding book of poetry published in the United States in the previous calendar year. In addition, the winner will receive an inclusive 10-day residency at Glen Hollow in Naples, New York, and distribution of the winning book to hundreds of Academy of American Poets members.

Anhinga Press Prize for Poetry

Anhinga Press, Inc. is a non-profit dedicated to bringing quality poetry to a broad audience. The Anhinga Prize for Poetry is open to all poets for a manuscript of original poetry in English. The winner receives $2000 and publication by Anhinga Press.

The Katherine Singer Kovacs Prize

The Modern Language Association invites authors to compete for the annual Katherine Singer Kovacs Prize for an outstanding book published in English or Spanish in the field of Latin American and Spanish literatures and cultures. This prize includes a cash award.

The Society Romanian Studies Biannual Book Award

The Society for Romanian Studies (SRS)is an international interdisciplinary academic organization based in the US and dedicated to promoting research and critical studies on all aspects of the culture and society of the diverse peoples connected to Romania and Moldova. The SRS Book Award is given for the best book published in English in any field of Romanian studies. This award includes a cash prize.

The Holberg Prize

The Ludvig Holberg Memorial Fund invites nominations for the Holberg International Memorial Prize for outstanding scholarly work in the academic fields of the arts and humanities, social science, law and theology. The prize, which includes a cash award of $670,000, is given to scholars who have made outstanding contributions to research in the arts and humanities, social science, law or theology, either within these fields or through interdisciplinary work.

The Frontiers of Knowledge Awards

The BBVA Foundation invites nominations for the Frontiers of Knowledge Awards. BBVA is a Spanish multinational financial services company based in Madrid and Bilbao, Spain.These awards recognize fundamental contributions in a broad array of areas of scientific knowledge, technology, humanities and artistic creation. Recipients will receive a €400,000 cash prize.

* Elliott P. Skinner Book Award for Africanist Anthropology

The Association for Africanist Anthropology (AFAA) promotes the study of Africa, as well as Africanist scholarship and the professional interests of Africanist anthropologists. The AfAA sponsors the annual Elliott P. Skinner Book Award. The prize is to the book that best furthers both the global community of Africanist scholars and the wider interests of the African continent The award consists of a $1,000 prize.

The Nineteenth Century Studies Association Article Prize

The Nineteenth Century Studies Association (NCSA) is an interdisciplinary Association for the study of nineteenth-century world cultures.The Article Prize, recognizes excellence in scholarly studies from any discipline focusing on any aspect of the long nineteenth century (French Revolution to World War I). The winner will receive a cash award of $500.

The Dan David Prize

The Dan David Prize is endowed by the Dan David Foundation, headquartered at Tel Aviv University. The Dan David Prize awards up to nine prizes to outstanding early and mid-career scholars and practitioners in the historical disciplines. The award invites nominations for researchers who focus on the study of the human past, employing any chronological, geographical and methodological focus.

Claremont Graduate University Poetry Prizes

Claremont Graduate University offers multiple prizes for original poetry. The Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award and the Kate Tufts Discovery Award are awarded for book-length collection of poems.

The SECAC Award for Excellence in Scholarly Research and Publication

SECAC is a national non-profit organization devoted to education and research in the visual arts.The SECAC Award for Excellence in Scholarly Research and Publication recognizes outstanding research shown in a recent publication (within the last two years) of a book, article, or series of articles related to Art and/or Art History.

The Phi Beta Kappa Book Awards

The Phi Beta Kappa Book Awards are given annually to outstanding scholarly books published in the United States. Winning works, which are drawn from the fields of the humanities and the social sciences must be of broad interest and accessible to the general reader. The family of prizes includes the Christian Gauss Award for books in the field of literary scholarship or criticism and The Ralph Waldo Emerson Award for scholarly studies that contribute significantly to interpretations of the intellectual and cultural condition of humanity. Submission for the Phi Beta Kappa Awards begins September 1, 2023.

The University of Iowa Press PrizesS

The University of Iowa Press offers multiple prizes for original creative works. The Iowa Short Fiction Award and John Simmons Short Fiction Award is given to a collection of short stories in English. The Iowa Poetry Prize is awarded for a book-length collection of poems written originally in English. The prize is open to new as well as established poets.

The Philip Levine Prize for Poetry

The Philip Levine Prize for Poetry is an annual book contest sponsored by the Creative Writing Program at California State University, Fresno. This contest is open to any poet writing in English and offers a $2,000 prize.


The American-Scandinavian Foundation Translation Prizes.

The American-Scandinavian Foundation awards three prizes annually for outstanding translations of poetry, fiction, drama, or literary prose written by a 20th or 21st-century Nordic author.

The Society for Classical Studies Award for Excellence in Teaching

The Society for Classical Studies (SCS), supports research and teaching on the study of ancient Greek and Roman languages, literatures, history, material culture. The SCS invites nominations for the annual award for Excellence in Teaching. Nominees must have a minimum of five years of teaching experience of subject matter that is “classical” in the widest sense.

The Bibliographical Society of America Prizes

The Bibliographical Society of America (BSA) promotes bibliographical research and issuing bibliographical publications. The BSA offers The Mitchell Prize for research on British 18th-century serials, periodicals, or newspapers; the Justin G. Schiller Prize for Bibliographical Work on Pre-20th-Century Children’s Books; and the St. Louis Mercantile Library Prize for scholarship in the bibliography of American history and literature. The Missouri Review Prizes

The Missouri Review is a literary magazine published through the University of Missouri. The Missouri Review offers prizes for creative fiction, essays, poetry, podcasts and more. The Missouri Review invites entries to three writing competitions each year, the Jeffrey E. Smith Editors’ Prize, the Miller Audio Prize, and the Perkoff Prize. The Gründler Book Prize

The Medieval Institute at Western Michigan University invites submissions for the annaul Otto Gründler Book Prize. This award consists of an award of a $1,000 cash prize to the author of a monograph in any area of medieval studies.

The Yale Younger Poets Prize

The Yale Younger Poets Prize is an annual literary award open to emerging poets who have not previously published a book of poetry and who reside in the United States. Submissions must be original, book-length poetry manuscripts written in the English language.

The American Society for Environmental History Prizes

The American Society for Environmental History (ASEH), supports research on sustainability and reducing environmental and social injustice. The ASEH offers a variety of competitive prizes and awards, including The George Perkins Marsh Prize for the best book in environmental history and the Leopold-Hidy Prize for best article. The Hagley Prize

Hagley Museum and Library furthers the study of business and technology in America. The Hagley Prize is an annual award for the best book in business history, broadly defined.
